Using the Landing Page Template (Pioneer)

Some pages on your Pioneer theme website could probably benefit from having a different layout than the standard pages within your site. While you can get creative with the default page template through formatting, like using columns, buttons and photos, we’ve also provided a Landing Page template for pages that need a little extra oomph.

The Landing Page template allows you to lay out content in rows with an optional image on the left side, and some styled text on the right. It’s also very customizable. You can use it with or without a sidebar and choose whether or not a row will have an image or link associated with it.

When Should You Use the Template?

This template is ideal for summarizing programs and services or highlighting your staff and board. As a general rule, you probably wouldn’t select this layout for a page where you have a lot of content to add.

This is really meant for small chunks of information to be read in an easy-to-scan way. It’s ideal for parent pages where you’re quickly trying to get your users to find what they need and dive deeper.

Activate the Landing Page Template

Log in to the back end of your website and navigate to the page you’d like to use the Landing Page template on. Likely you’ll see the default page template when you first get to your chosen page.

To activate the Landing Page template, find the Page Attributes section on the right-hand side of your page and click the Template dropdown menu. Select “Landing Page” and click the blue update button. This will update the fields you see for inputting your main content onto the page.

Customize the Landing Page Template

Sidebar or no sidebar?

The first thing you’ll do when you set up your landing page template is decide whether or not you’d like the page to be full width or include a sidebar.

Landing Page Sidebar

If you’d like to include a sidebar, make sure the toggle is set to “show,” then you can edit the sidebar in the back end as you would for any other page layout.

Add an introductory paragraph

It’s always a good idea to give site visitors an introduction to each page so they know what information to expect. This option is located under the Intro Content section in the back end of your landing page template. This text should give your site visitors an overview of what you’ll cover on the page.

To edit this text, use the editor field to type new content. You can format the text, add images, add links and use shortcodes within this section.

Edit the horizontal rows

Under the “Horizontal Sections” heading in the back end, you can add and edit all of your rows of content. This is the meat and potatoes of the Landing Page Template, and it’s the most customizable area. Follow the instructions below to update this section to your liking.

Horizontal Section
  1. Use the toggle at the top of each row to decide if you’d like to display a square image to the left of the row or not. If you’ve elected to display an image, crop and upload an image at 220 pixels wide by 200 pixels tall.
  2. Enter a text heading for the row.
  3. Write your description text into the “Section Content” field. Here you can bold and italicize text to create emphasis, but you will not be able to add a link to specific words here.
  4. Next, select a link for the section as a whole (optional). If the section is linked the entire section will change color when someone moves their cursor over the area. If the section does not have a link associated with it, the section will remain static on the front end.

Add or remove a row

To add or remove a row, hover over the row in the back end of the page. You should notice that plus and minus signs show up on the right-hand side of each row.

To add a row, simply click on the plus sign either above or below a row depending on where you’d like the new row to populate. To delete a row, click the minus sign associated with the row you’d like to remove and it will disappear.

Reorder rows

If you’d like to change the order in which the rows appear, simply click and drag the numbered gray bar on the left side of the section. This will allow you to easily decide which individual horizontal row should appear in what order. You’ll know you’ve found the right gray bar when your cursor looks like 4 arrows in the shape of a cross.

Edit the conclusion

To add or edit the conclusion content on the Landing Page template, scroll to the section titled “Conclusion Content.” This content does not appear in a styled row like the sections above. Here you can format your text how you’d like, add links to specific text, and even add an inline call to action if you like. Use the Inline CTA shortcode to dictate where it should appear within your conclusion content.
