Content on your website is much more than the text on your pages and posts. It also includes photos, annual reports, research presentations, toolkits and more that you use to make your site shine and provide more information to your visitors.

Before using these files on your site, you’ll need to add them to your media library. In this article, we outline what to do when a file is too large to upload to your website’s media library.

Why Is There a File Size Limit?

There is a 10 MB limit in place for all of our website plans. This limit exists for two important reasons.

First of all, it prevents large files from taking up a ton of storage space on your website. It also helps make these files easier for visitors to access. Large files take a lot more time to load on the page and for users to download, which can provide a pretty frustrating experience for your visitors. Compressing files like photos and PDFs is a great way to avoid these issues.

It’s worth noting that the approach for handling video files is slightly different. If you want to add a video to your website, it’s best to use a site like YouTube or Vimeo to host your video. You can then insert that video onto your page rather than adding it to your media library directly.

How to Compress a Large File

If you’re unable to upload a file due to its size exceeding the limit, we recommend utilizing a file compression tool.

If you need to compress photos, we suggest using TinyPNG; it’s a free tool that can reduce the size of your photo files. Another option is WeCompress, a free online service that can compress a variety of file types, such as PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, and more. Other similar websites that offer free file compression are Adobe Acrobat, and I Love Pdf

To learn how to use WeCompress, let’s go through an example step by step.

  • Visit WeCompress.com to get started.
  • Drag your file or click the “+” button to choose your document.

  • Wait for WeCompress to finish compressing the file size.
  • Once the compression is complete, click the download button to save the compressed file to your computer.

Once you have the compressed version of the file, and it’s 10 MB or less, you can upload it to your media library and follow these steps to add your PDF to a page on your site. If you compressed an image, check out these steps to add a photo to a page
